The Buganda Tourism and Heritage Board, the body responsible for promoting tourism has a new board. Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga inaugurated the new board today at Bulange Mengo calling them upon to promote the Kingdom’s tourism and heritage potential.
“We have a lot of potential. We are nearly 1000 years old with an unbelievable story that is of interest to both local and international tourists,” Mayiga said. “Look at a place like Nnono in Ssingo County where Buagnda’s constitutional (ennono) was formulated. It is an ideal visit for any tourist,” he added.
He cited city-states like Dubai which receive millions of tourist a year yet their attractions were only recently built and not as authentic as those in Buganda.
The new board which is led by Ms Jane Nankabirwa Kabugo promised to do whatever it takes to ensure that the Kingdom tourism is boosted.
The other members of the 13-member board are Dr. Iga Daniel, Syson Namaganda Musiitwa, Remigious Kigongo, John Kitenda, Nsubuga David, Rosemary Namatovu Ssennabulya, Bashir Kizito,SSemakadde James, Ssemuwemba Joseph and Annet Nakawunde.
Amos Wakesa of Great Lake Safaris – Uganda’s biggest tourism company and Prof Edward Kirumira who recently contested in the race for Makerere University Vice Chancellor slot complete the board.
The state minister for tourism, Owek Rita Namyalo thanked the old board for the great work it has done in setting the pace for this very important aspect of the Kingdom.
